Jaw Pain

Malocclusion of the teeth, or insufficient contact between the upper and lower teeth can contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint problems, which result in jaw pain

Jaw Pain, But Why?

Jaw pain is usually a result of various temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and/or bruxism (excessive teeth grinding and jaw clenching). These disorders are often hereditary. Other forms include creaking sounds accompanied by pain with or without difficulty opening your mouth, which can be caused by trauma or joint disease.

Jaw Pain? Come see us.

There are several treatments to treat and relieve jaw related problems. Treatment plans vary based on the patient and the diagnosis. It often calls for a multidisciplinary approach, with care provided by different specialists, including an orthodontist.  Orthodontic treatment is often suggested to maximize contact between the teeth and restore dental occlusion (bite) which will help reduce jaw pain. Orthodontic treatment may include the use of braces or simply a mouthguard at night. In certain cases, orthodontics allow correction of misaligned teeth in preparation for jaw surgery (aimed at improving the upper and lower jaw relation).

Jaw Surgery

If the misalignment between jaws is too severe to be corrected just by orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery (or orthognatic surgery) may be necessary. This work can help push back, bring forward, widen or narrow upper or lower jaws, or fix a combination of these problems. If your orthodontist deems that having an operation is a viable option, they will recommend you to an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon during your orthodontic treatment.
